How to prepare homemade flaxseed gel to moisturize hair or define curls

Flaxseed gel, also called linseed gel, is obtained by boiling flax seeds. This viscous product can be applied to the hair as a natural mask or as a gel to style, hold and define curls. Flaxseed gel has many properties, including the ability to seal moisture within the hair fiber, which helps prevent porosity, frizz and split ends. Read on to learn how to prepare flaxseed gel, how to apply it and more.

ABC of linen gel

What is flaxseed gel?

Flaxseed gel is a gelatinous substance made from flax seeds, water, and coconut or almond oil. It is obtained by boiling these ingredients and straining them once they are cold.

What are the properties of flaxseed gel?

Flaxseed gel is rich in nutrients, fatty acids and proteins. Given its concentration of omega 3 and vitamins B and E, it is a powerful moisturizer and antioxidant, with the ability to seal in moisture and strengthen hair.

What is flaxseed gel used for in hair?

Flaxseed gel is used as a hair treatment, as it promotes strong, soft and shiny hair. It promotes growth, provides moisture, regenerates damaged hair, mitigates frizz and helps balance the pH of the scalp. It is also used to style and define curls.

Why is flax gel good for curls?

Flaxseed gel is popular among those following the Curly Girl method, as it is used in the finishing step to shape and define curls. This gel allows the hair to retain the nutrients previously provided by masks. In turn, it helps to tame frizz.

How long does flax gel last?

As it is a homemade gel, without preservatives, it can be kept refrigerated in an airtight container for approximately one week.

Flaxseed gel step by step

You need

  • 2 tablespoons of flax seeds.
  • 250 ml of water.
  • Strainer.
  • Optional: cloves or cinnamon stick.
  • Glass jar.

Procedure

In a small saucepan, bring the water to a boil over high heat. You can add the cloves or cinnamon stick at this point to make the gel smell better and last a little longer. Just before it boils, add the flax seeds and stir with a wooden spoon. When it reaches boiling point and a white foam appears, lower the heat and continue stirring for approximately 2 or 3 more minutes. Leave it on the heat until you notice that the water has taken on a thick, viscous texture. To check the consistency, take a little with the wooden spoon and watch how the mixture falls.

Remove from heat and pour into a clean glass container using a strainer. If you let it cool too much before transferring it to the container, it will be more difficult to strain. Once in the container, let it cool well and store it covered in the refrigerator to seal its texture and preserve its properties.

Linen gel as a treatment mask

You can use flaxseed gel as a natural mask to moisturize your hair, strengthen the hair follicle to promote growth , combat frizz, repair damage , and even balance the pH of the scalp . For this reason, it is ideal for people with oily hair .

After washing your hair, apply the flaxseed gel to your entire head, gently massaging it into your scalp . Leave this natural mask on for 30 minutes and rinse with plenty of lukewarm to cold water.

Linen gel to style and model curls

Gels are a key product for Curly Girl followers. In the finishing stage, after washing (either co-wash or low poo ), they are applied to shape and define waves or curls . In turn, the gel helps to retain moisture and prevent frizz. Depending on the hair pattern and need/behavior, the finishing stage may include other products such as styling creams and oils such as almond oil . The order of application will vary from person to person.

To do this, apply the flaxseed gel to damp hair, from mid-length to ends, avoiding the roots. Allow it to dry and then scrunch ( a gesture in which the hair is squeezed with the hands, applying slight upward pressure) to break up the cast (the hardness that forms when the hair dries). In this case, do not rinse.

Try : the line consisting of TRESemmé Low Poo + Nourishment Shampoo and Conditioner , a low-sulfate, paraben- and silicone-free cleansing system. Its formula with coconut oil and coconut water provides gentle cleansing.
